ROH 5 Count: Reasons To Be Excited About Crockett Cup

The classic Crockett Cup tag team tournament is back after an absence of more than 30 years, as the NWA and ROH have joined forced to present the Crockett Cup pay-per-view event on Saturday, April 27 at the Cabarrus Arena in Concord, NC. The PPV will stream live and free for HonorClub VIP members. HonorClub monthly members will receive 50% off the $24.95 price.

Here are five reasons to be excited about Crockett Cup:

5. APPEARANCES BY LEGENDS

Both the NWA and ROH have always had great respect for pro wrestling tradition, so it’s no surprise that stars who competed on the inaugural Crockett Cup show in 1986 have been invited to appear. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express, Magnum T.A., Nikita Koloff and The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton, Dennis Condrey, Stan Lane and manager Jim Cornette) will all be on hand in Concord. They will be available for autographs and photos with fans as part of a VIP experience prior to the show.

4. NWA NATIONAL AND NWA WOMEN’S TITLE MATCHES

NWA National Champion Willie Mack and Colt Cabana have teamed together a couple times, including earlier this year in ROH’s Tag Wars, but when Mack puts his title on the line against Cabana in Concord, it will be the first singles match between the two veterans. Mack has held the championship since winning it in a tournament in October. Cabana is coming off a strong showing in the New Japan Cup last month.

Originally, Jazz was scheduled to defend the NWA Women’s Title against Allysin Kay, but she relinquished the title this week “due to medical and personal issues.” So now Kay will face international star Santana Garrett for the vacant championship at Crockett Cup.

3. FLIP GORDON AND BANDIDO TEAM UP FOR FIRST TIME

Gordon and Bandido have been in the ring together on two occasions -- on opposite sides of a 10-man tag match and as opponents in a Four Corner Survival Match -- and both times the fast-rising young stars electrified the crowd. Now they have joined forces for the Crockett Cup tournament, where they will face CMLL stars Guerrero Maya Jr. and Stuka Jr. in an exciting first-round matchup.

Gordon and Bandido have to be considered underdogs in the eight-team tournament because of their lack of experience as a team, but no one should be surprised if they make some noise in the Crockett Cup and steal the show while doing it.

2. BRISCOES FACE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL EXPRESS IN FIRST-ROUND DREAM MATCH

When The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) competed in the inaugural Crockett Cup tournament, Jay and Mark Briscoe were toddlers. Now, the Briscoes are regarded as the greatest tag team in ROH history and one of the top teams in the sport. Meanwhile, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express continue to be very active on the independent scene, where the Hall of Famers routinely defeat teams who aren’t even half their age.

Whoever comes out on top in this tag match for the ages will face the winner of the first-round match pitting PCO and Brody King against Japanese legends Satoshi Kojima and Yuji Nagata.

1. MARTY SCURLL CHALLENGES NICK ALDIS FOR NWA WORLDS TITLE

In February, Aldis asked his longtime friend Scurll to be his tag partner for the Crockett Cup tournament, but “The Villain” had a different idea. Scurll challenged Aldis to put his title on the line at Crockett Cup, and the champion accepted. Since then, things have gotten tense between them. At ROH’s international television taping in Pittsburgh on April 13, a verbal confrontation between Aldis and Scurll ended with Scurll doing his finger-break move on his old friend.

After coming up short in the Triple Threat Ladder Match for the ROH World Title at G1 Supercard on April 6, Scurll is even more determined to put the 10 pounds of gold around his waist. Aldis, however, has shown that he will stop at nothing to achieve victory -- just like Scurll. Will Scurll make history, or will Aldis turn back his toughest challenge to date? Regardless of who leaves with the title, can their friendship survive?
