ROH 5 Count: Jushin 'Thunder' Liger’s Most Memorable ROH Matches

Jushin “Thunder” Liger wrestled the final matches of his legendary career this past weekend at New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s two Wrestle Kingdom 14 events. Over the years, ROH fans had the privilege of seeing Liger perform live on numerous occasions.

Here are five of Liger’s most memorable matches in ROH:

5. LIGER & CHEESEBURGER vs. THE ADDICTION (May 8, 2016)

Liger saw something in Cheeseburger -- who had been a huge fan of Liger’s as a youth -- and decided to mentor the popular underdog, including teaching him his signature Shotei palm strike. At the Global Wars pay-per-view, teacher and student teamed together for the first time. They faced a tough test in former ROH World Tag Team Champions The Addiction (Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian), but Liger and Cheeseburger pulled off the huge upset, with Cheeseburger scoring the pinfall.

4. LIGER vs. DALTON CASTLE (May 16, 2015)

Just a few months removed from competing in the Top Prospect Tournament, Castle found himself standing across the ring from arguably the most famous Japanese wrestler ever. In going move-for-move with Liger, Castle showed flashes of the main-event star he would become, but this was Liger’s night. At one point, Liger flustered Castle -- and entertained the crowd -- by calling Castle’s Boys into the ring to pose with him, and they were more than happy to oblige. Liger went on to win the back-and-forth match with a brainbuster.

3. LIGER & SAMOA JOE vs. BRYAN DANIELSON & LOW KI (Nov. 6, 2004)

Liger teamed with then-ROH World Champion Joe to face former world champion Low Ki and future world champion Danielson in a star-studded tag team bout on Night 2 of Weekend of Thunder, two shows named in honor of Liger to commemorate his first appearances in a U.S. ring in five years. The match lived up to the hype, as all four competitors were at the top of their game. Liger scored the winning pinfall for his team after hitting a Liger Bomb on Danielson.

2. LIGER vs. ADAM COLE FOR THE ROH WORLD TITLE (May 17, 2014)

Liger has won championships all over the world, including the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title a record 11 times. At the War of the Worlds pay-per-view, Liger got his only shot at the ROH World Title -- and he very nearly added it to his Hall of Fame resume. Liger punished Cole with a series of submission moves before hitting a brainbuster for a near fall. Although Cole ultimately prevailed, Liger showed that even at nearly 50 years old he was still able to hold his own against one of the best in the world.

1. LIGER vs. DANIELSON (Nov. 5, 2004)

The main event of Night 1 of Weekend of Thunder pitted Liger against Danielson in a dream match. It would be the one and only singles encounter between the iconic Liger and Danielson, who was well on his way to becoming the best technical wrestler in the sport. Danielson was ultra-aggressive during the match, but “The American Dragon” couldn’t put the resilient Liger away. With the raucous crowd cheering him on, Liger landed a super brainbuster for the victory after nearly 20 minutes of intense action.
