Night One of Honor Rising is in the books! You can watch the event on demand with English commentary from Kevin Kelly and Rocky Romero at NJPWWorld.com. The stars of Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro-Wrestling did battle with and against one another. Bullet Club made their long-awaited return to NJPW while long-standing issues between CHAOS and Bullet Club took center stage. But following an amazing night of wrestling, a night where ROH stars made their debuts in Japan, the biggest story might be what took place after the main event!
The opening contest saw Juice Robinson score a pinfall on Gedo, propelling the team of Robinson, KUSHIDA, and David Finlay over Gedo, Jado, and Silas Young. Young was very impressive in his Japanese debut but Robinson was the difference with Pulp Friction. In the NEVER Openweight Six Men Tag Team championship match, Los Ingobernables de Japon defeated the masked team of Delirious and international legends Jushin “Thunder” Liger and Tiger Mask when Sanada submitted Delirious with the Skull End.
In an eight-man tag, the CHAOS team of IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada, NEVER Openweight Champion Hirooki Goto, Will Ospreay, and YOSHI-HASHI defeated the Bullet Club team of the Guerillas of Destiny, Bad Luck Fale, and Yujiro Takahashi. YOSHI-HASHI secured the pinfall just one day ahead of his bout for the ROH World Championship against Adam Cole! During the event, it was announced that YOSHI-HASHI would pick up the title defenses of Cole should he capture the championship on Night 2!
War Machine, who had a visual pinfall during The Experience in a ROH World Tag Team Title match, defeated the Young Bucks following Fallout in a non-title bout! With the win, War Machine clearly has the Young Bucks number. The Young Bucks have a long road ahead of them; if they can get past their signed defenses against the teams of Jay White and Lio Rush at Manhattan Mayhem, Roppongi Vice at 15th Anniversary on Pay Per View, and the Hardy Boyz at Supercard of Honor, they can expect to defend their championships a team that now has an official victory over them!
In another ROH debut in Japan, Punishment Martinez made his mark felt, leading his team of IWGP Intercontinental Champion Tetsuya Naito and IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi of Los Ingobernables de Japon to victory over former IWGP Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi, Dalton Castle, and Ryusuke Taguchi! It was Martinez who spurned Los Ignobernables de Japon’s fist gestures but it was also Martinez that won the match pinning Castle following the South of Heaven Chokeslam. Martinez has been impressive in ROH competition but the pin on the man who will challenge for the ROH World Championship on April 1 is his most impressive performance to date!
There’s no love lost between Jay Lethal and both “The American Nightmare” Cody and Hangman Page. And Lethal got a measure of revenge on Page when he teamed with Shibata to defeat the two members of Bullet Club! Lethal pinned Page following the Lethal Injection but spent most of the match trying to get his hands on Cody. The two will do battle at Supercard of Honor in a Bullrope Match!
In the main event, ROH World Champion Adam Cole and “The Cleaner” Kenny Omega teamed up to defeat the greatest team in ROH history, the Briscoes. Cole hit the Last Shot on Mark Briscoe before being draped with the ROH World Championship following the victory. Omega has remained relatively silent since competing in what some are saying was the greatest match in wrestling history at Wrestle Kingdom but has begun to release statements in recent days to New Japan media.
While the two Bullet Club members emerged victorious, there appeared to be tension between two of the top stars in the world. Cole stole the mic from Omega when Omega was addressing the crowd to remind Omega and the viewing audience that he was the only three-time ROH World Champion. When Omega got the last word in, Cole and Omega went face to face as Romero aptly pointed out that the Young Bucks may be caught in the middle. The two shook hands but there may be trouble in paradise with Bullet Club!
Honor Rising Night 2 will begin streaming live at 4:30 AM on NJPWWorld.com with Kevin Kelly and Rocky Romero once again on the call in English!
