Eck’s Files: How Are Lethal, Taven, Scurll Preparing For Ladder Match? First Set Of Names Announced For Honor Rumble; What Is PCO Planning For MSG?

By Kevin Eck

Here’s the latest ROH news and notes:

ROH World Champion Jay Lethal, Matt Taven and Marty Scurll, who will face each other in a triple threat ladder match for the title in the G1 Supercard main event on April 6 at sold-out Madison Square Garden, are preparing for the big match in completely different ways.

Lethal, a student of the game, has been watching classic ladder matches; Taven, who worked in the marketing department of the New England Patriots years ago, has sought advice from Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady on how to mentally prepare for the biggest match of his career under the bright lights of “The World’s Most Famous Arena;” and Scurll has been training in seclusion at an undisclosed location. …

ROH has announced the first set of participants for the Honor Rumble, which takes place on the G1 Supercard pre-show. They are: Kenny King, PJ Black, The Bouncers (Beer City Bruiser and Brian Milonas) and Cheeseburger. New Japan Pro-Wrestling previously announced that the legendary Jushin “Thunder” Liger will be in the Rumble. ...

I’m told there will be several surprises in the Rumble, including one competitor who has had numerous matches at Madison Square Garden and even defended a world title there. …

There’s been a lot of speculation as to who will answer Bully Ray’s open challenge for a New York City Street Fight at G1 Supercard. Bully Ray has angered a lot of people in the ROH locker room, so there is no shortage of potential opponents for him. …

A big main event has been signed for Masters of the Craft in Columbus, Ohio, on April 14, as Lethal and Jonathan Gresham will face LifeBlood’s Mark Haskins and “Hot Sauce” Tracy Williams in a 30-minute Iron Man tag match. It’s fitting that a match involving four of the most technically sound and honorable competitors in ROH headlines an event called Masters of the Craft. At last year’s Masters of the Craft in Columbus, Lethal defeated Gresham in an instant classic. ...

Jay and Mark Briscoe cashed in their rematch clause against ROH World Tag Team Champions PCO and Brody King for Road to G1 Supercard in Baltimore on March 31 because they want to walk into Madison Square Garden as the defending champions. As the most decorated and longest tenured tag team in ROH history, the Briscoes believe they deserve to enter the ring on the company’s biggest show ever with the championship belts in their possession.

One team will leave MSG with both the ROH World and IWGP Heavyweight Tag Titles, as the Briscoes, PCO and King, IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions The Guerrillas of Destiny, and EVIL and SANADA go to war in a four-way match. No team has ever held both sets of titles simultaneously. …

PCO says he has something special planned for G1 Supercard. I have no idea what that means, but based on what we’ve seen from the inhuman “French-Canadian Frankenstein” thus far, the possibilities are both endless and frightening. …

The mysterious and sinister Destro, PCO’s trainer, will join PCO as a guest on Coleman’s Pulpit at the G1 Supercard Festival of Honor on April 5 at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater. Good luck with that, Caprice. …

ROH World Television Champion Jeff Cobb is undefeated in singles competition since steamrolling Punishment Martinez to win the title in September, but he did suffer a pinfall loss in a tag match at Honor Rising in Tokyo last month. The man who pinned him in that match was NEVER Openweight Champion Will Ospreay, who will face Cobb in a title vs. title match at G1 Supercard. ...

ROH officials, who have been scouting female competitors from around the globe, will be keeping a close eye on the Women of Honor triple threat tag match at Road to G1 Supercard in Baltimore between the teams of Sumie Sakai and Jenny Rose, Kris Stadtlander and Tasha Steelz, and Gabby Ortiz and Karissa Rivera. …

Silas Young has added incentive for his match against Haskins in Baltimore. Young has not forgotten that Haskins defeated him in Haskins’ first match in an ROH ring, at War of the Worlds in Liverpool, England in 2017, and he’s made it clear that the LifeBlood member has a target on his back. ...

Speaking of Young, “The Last Real Man in Pro Wrestling’s” Twitter rants in which he criticizes ROH officials for not booking him in a match at G1 Supercard are not sitting well with ROH management. ...

Dalton Castle will be paying very close attention to the match between RUSH and Williams in Baltimore. Castle believes a victory over RUSH, a huge star in CMLL who has been undefeated in ROH, at G1 Supercard is exactly what he needs to get back on track and into contention for the ROH World Title he held for more than six months in 2017-2018 before being derailed by multiple injuries. …

Veteran independent wrestler Colin Delaney, who won a couple dark matches in ROH last year and also had a good showing in a Survival of the Fittest qualifying match, will have another opportunity to impress ROH officials when he teams with Coast 2 Coast against Shinobi Shadow Squad (Cheeseburger, Eli Isom and Ryan Nova) in a six-man tag match in Baltimore. …

A former ROH World Tag Team Champion has expressed interest in returning to ROH. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him competing in an ROH ring in the near future.
