Eck's Files: Briscoes Will Face G.O.D. In No-DQ Title Match; Top Prospect Tournament Returning; Summer Supercard Announcements

By Kevin Eck

Here’s the latest ROH news and notes:

The ROH Board of Directors heard Jay and Mark Briscoe’s request for a no-disqualification title match with ROH World Tag Team Champions The Guerrillas of Destiny and have been in contact with New Japan Pro-Wrestling officials about putting the match together. ROH officials have confirmed that the date and site for the next chapter in the war between the two highly decorated teams will be announced this coming Monday, June 3.

The last time the Briscoes and G.O.D. (Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa) squared off, in an HonorClub exclusive match in Chicago on May 12, G.O.D. retained their titles thanks to Tonga nailing Jay Briscoe in the head with a title belt. …

Nick Aldis will defend the NWA Worlds Championship and there will be an authentic CMLL trios match at Summer Supercard at Toronto’s Mattamy Athletic Centre on Aug. 9. The huge event will feature top stars from ROH, NJPW, CMLL and the NWA. …

The ROH Top Prospect Tournament is returning this summer. It will begin on July 21 at Mass Hysteria in Lowell, Mass. Past TPT winners include current ROH World Champion Matt Taven, Mike Bennett and Lio Rush, and a number of TPT competitors went on to become ROH stars, including Dalton Castle, Adam Cole, Adam Page, Kyle O’Reilly, Silas Young and Jonathan Gresham.

Last year’s TPT had to be called off after Jeff Cobb stormed into ROH and kept interrupting the matches to send a message that he had arrived and the landscape had changed. …

Speaking of Cobb, it was announced earlier this week that he will challenge Taven for the ROH World Championship at the Best in the World pay-per-view on June 28 in Baltimore. It will be the first shot at the world title for Cobb, who squashed Punishment Martinez to win the ROH World Television Title in his debut match last September and still has yet to be pinned or forced to submit in an ROH ring. …

Before looking ahead to facing Cobb, Taven -- who will no longer be allowed to have fellow Kingdom members TK O’Ryan and Vinny Marseglia at ringside during his title defenses -- must first get past “Hot Sauce” Tracy Williams, who faces Taven in a title match at State of the Art on Saturday, June 1 in Kent, Was.

If Williams upsets Taven to win the title, he will replace Taven in the Defy or Deny elimination match at the other State of the Art event, on Sunday, June 2 in Portland, Ore. (the show will stream live for HonorClub). The other participants in Defy or Deny are PCO, Flip Gordon, and Williams’ fellow LifeBlood member Mark Haskins.

In Defy or Deny, if the ROH World Champion wins, whoever is eliminated last cannot challenge for the world title until there is a new champion. Should one of the three challengers win, they will receive a future ROH World Title shot. …

Expect the Best in the World pay-per-view card to begin to take shape after this weekend’s shows in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to Cobb’s ROH World Title shot, the only other match announced thus far for the pay-per-view is ROH World Television Champion Shane Taylor defending against Bandido. ...

Villain Enterprises (“The Villain” Marty Scurll, PCO and Brody King) will defend the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Titles at Best in the World in Baltimore. Their opponents are to be determined, but logical contenders include LifeBlood, Bullet Club (G.O.D. and Hikuleo) and Shinobi Shadow Squad (Cheeseburger, Eli Isom and Ryan Nova). Bully Ray, Taylor and Young also have teamed together on occasion.

Speaking of Villain Enterprises, the group is searching for a fourth member. Scurll and King have had an extended stay in Japan, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the new member comes from the NJPW roster. …

The Allure will finally make their in-ring debut this weekend. Angelina Love and Mandy Leon, with Velvet Sky in their corner, will face Mazzerati and Notorious Nadi in tag action in Portland.

Mazzerati, by the way, impressed ROH officials at the recent recruitment combine. Expect more women from the combine to get opportunities with Women of Honor in the upcoming months. …

Colt Cabana is known for his sense of humor and ability to entertain fans, but he is taking his reign as NWA National Champion very seriously. A two-time former NWA Worlds Champion, Cabana has great respect for the NWA and its tradition. When he faces Mark Briscoe in Kent, Cabana will be defending the title as well as the honor of the NWA.

The Briscoes declared war on the NWA after they were disqualified in an NWA-sanctioned match in the Crockett Cup tournament in April. Things escalated recently when the Briscoes attacked Cabana in his hometown of Chicago after his title defense against James Storm. …

PJ Black suffered a partial tear in his biceps during the recent War of the Worlds tour but he has been cleared for action this weekend in Kent and Portland. Black will compete in a Four Corner Survival Match along with RUSH, Castle and Gordon in Kent. The match will be streamed live exclusively for HonorClub at 7 p.m. Pacific time. The next night in Portland, Black faces Cobb. …

The Voros Twins have been added to the tag team gauntlet match in Portland. The flamboyant twins made their ROH debut a few months ago, losing to The Bouncers (Beer City Bruiser and Brawler Milonas).

Previously announced for the gauntlet match -- the winner of which will receive a future shot at the ROH World Tag Team Titles -- are The Kingdom (O’Ryan and Marseglia), The Bouncers, Coast 2 Coast (LSG and Shaheem Ali), Taylor and Young, and the wild-card team of RUSH and Castle. …

Another match just announced for Kent pits Bully Ray and Taylor against Coast 2 Coast. The last time we saw Bully and Taylor in the ring together, The Soldiers of Savagery (Moses Maddox and Jasper Kaun) showed up and laid out LifeBlood members Bandido, Haskins and Williams. Will we see SOS in Kent?

Josh Woods also will be in action in Kent. The next night in Portland, Woods faces Mark Briscoe in the 2017 Top Prospect Tournament winner’s toughest challenge since returning to ROH in April. …

On this weekend’s episode of “Ring of Honor Wrestling,” The Allure will deliver their mission statement. We’ll also hear from Castle, and the main event pits two NJPW tag teams against each other, as Los Ingobernables de Japon’s EVIL and SANADA take on Japanese legends Satoshi Kojima and Yuji Nagata.
