Ring of Honor is saddened to learn that Francisco “Paco” Alonso, the president of Mexico’s CMLL promotion, has died. He was 66.
Alonso, who was inducted into The Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame in 2008, was one of the most influential promoters in pro wrestling history. In a statement from CMLL on the company’s website regarding Alsono’s passing, he was credited with spearheading the modernization of pro wrestling in Mexico.
Alonso had been running CMLL since 1987, when he took over for his uncle, Salvador Lurreth Jr. Alonso’s grandfather, Salvador Lutteroth Sr., founded the company in 1933. Under Alonso, CMLL forged working relationships with both ROH and New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
ROH extends its deepest condolences to Alonso’s family, friends and fans.
