Find out what Matt Taven’s connection is to the New England Patriots and Tom Brady, which WWE star he suspects is involved in The Kingdom Conspiracy, what his message is for Cody and more.
1. If you weren’t a pro wrestler what would you be doing for a living?
Well before becoming the greatest wrestler in Ring of Honor history, I was working in the front office of the prestigious New England Patriots. This was after I received a bachelor’s degree in sports, entertainment and event management and a minor in psychology from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, while recording music with two bands -- Winslow Gray and Rookie -- and being a founding father of Sigma Pi Fraternity’s Eta Omega chapter. So needless to say I’d be very successful in whatever career path I would have chosen. But to answer the question, I would probably be in the sports or entertainment field, but being a lifelong fan, hopefully I’d still be in the professional wrestling industry in some capacity.
2. What did you do specifically when you worked for the Patriots?
I worked in the marketing and sales department of both the New England Patriots and Revolution because I’m a smart freakin’ guy! But getting to see the work ethic and dedication of the greatest athlete of all time every day is probably where I learned to be the Tom Brady of not just The Kingdom, but all of Ring of Honor.
3. Who was your favorite wrestler when you were a kid?
Bret Hart hands down was my favorite as a kid. Not only is he amazing in the ring, but he has great hair, too. Guys with curly hair need to stick together. Chris Jericho is another favorite of mine, but that might change depending on this cruise. I feel like he’s part of this Kingdom Conspiracy.
4. Speaking of conspiracies, what’s your take on the Illuminati?
The Illuminati is very real. Whether these Melvins wearing Bullet Club shirts would like to admit it or not, their lives are spent in an endless hamster wheel working for the one percent, delusional to think that the American dream is alive and that one day their hard work will pay off. Ha! But still they blindly support the “big business” that’s suppressing them. Kind of like how they support Bullet Club.
5. What exactly is a Melvin?
If you have to ask you probably are one.
6. What was it specifically about Vinny Marseglia and TK O’Ryan that convinced you they were right for The Kingdom?
When The Kingdom was [Michael] Bennett, [Adam] Cole, Maria [Kanellis] and myself, it worked because it was real. Real friends who spend every moment with each other and truly wanted each other to succeed. With Vinny and TK, we have the same relationship. Vinny trained with Bennett and me at Spike Dudley’s Lock-Up school, and TK would come through the same school years later. The three of us along with Bennett run our own wrestling school now in Rhode Island and spend the majority of our time together. There is no one I trust more or would want to protect my Kingdom with than the Horror King and the Sassy Wild Horse.
7. You’ve been to Mexico several times to wrestle for CMLL. What’s your favorite thing about Mexico?
The ladies, duh. Arena Mexico is also pretty cool to wrestle in. A lot of legends have walked down those famous stairs and now they can all say they wrestled in the same arena as Matt Taven.
8. Do you have a guilty pleasure?
Yeah, myself … and Sting. I mean, I don't listen to any of his music, but I really respect that he's making it.
9. What’s something you’d like to know more about?
The Kingdom Conspiracy! Why? Why me? Why hold me down, Joe Koff? I deserve to be World Champion. I’m Matt Taven!
10. You’re involved in a fierce rivalry with Cody. If he is reading this, what would you say to him?
I’d insert a picture of my perfectly sculpted jawline with my J.P. Prewitt-like hand extended out in front of me displaying the Ring of the King, with these simple words underneath: Kiss the ring, b*tch.
