The fiery, charismatic Rocky Romero that ROH fans look at today is a far cry from the rough and rugged fighter who debuted in Ring of Honor at ROH Reborn: Stage One in April 2004.
His initial run in Ring of Honor came as part of the hard-nosed tag team with Ricky Reyes, who were known as The Havana Pit Bulls. They made quite the splash debuting against the Briscoe Brothers, setting a tone for a great run. The duo would join forces with the "Notorious 187" Homicide as part of the thuggish group The Rottweilers. Rocky would win his first ROH World Tag Team Championship when he and Reyes defeated CM Punk & Colt Cabana, The Second City Saints. They would hold the championships for a then-record-setting 196 days before losing them.
As Romero's stock rose, New Japan Pro Wrestling took notice and offered him a chance to break out as a singles performer in the land of the rising sun. Romero left Ring of Honor in 2005, but this would not be the last ROH fans would see of him.
In January 2007, the Cuban fireplug returned to Ring of Honor invigorated and performing on a whole new level. He turned his back on his partner Reyes and joined forces with Roderick Strong and Davey Richards to form the mentally militant No Remorse Corps. Romero & Davey Richards would win not only the 2008 version of Ultimate Endurance, but also the ROH World Tag Team Champions. The very same duo also went on to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship two times.
Perhaps Romero's greatest success came as part of The Forever Hooligans; a fun, athletic and undeniably tough pairing with Alex Koslov. Since debuting as a team in July 2012 for New Japan Pro Wrestling, the energetic duo won the IWGP Junior Tag Team Championship two times. The Hooligans then entered Ring of Honor with much fanfare. Already holding the IWGP Junior Tag Team Championship, they would enter the Ring of Honor history books on July 27, 2013 by defeating reDRagon for the Ring of Honor World Tag Team Championship. The run as champions was short lived, but the impression was lasting.
In January 2015, his tag team partner Alex Koslov announced he was taking a sabbatical from professional wrestling. This created numerous questions: will Rocky go it alone and test himself in singles competition? Or will he find a tag team partner and set out to conquer the division again?
Rocky would go it alone for a short time before debuting with tag team specialist Beretta in Ring of Honor as Roppongi Vice! The duo debuted on March 13, 2015 by defeating The Decade (BJ Whitmer & Jimmy Jacobs). The brash duo combined flashy and substance with technicality that caught many teams looking in the mirror asking if they could compete.
Roppongi Vice debuted in New Japan Pro Wrestling as part of the CHAOS stable alongside Kazuchika "Rainmaker" Okada, "King of Strong Style" Shinsuke Nakamura, Gedo, Tomohiro Ishii, Jado, Toru Yano and Yoshi-Hashi.
Less than 30 days after debuting as a unit, Roppongi Vice won the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships from The Young Bucks. RPG Vice would hold on to them for a short time before the Bucks regained them. The issues with RPG Vice and The Young Bucks still go unresolved as of today and are proving to be one of the best rivalries in professional wrestling today.
RPG Vice has proven themselves against reDRagon, The Briscoes, The Addiciton, The Kingdom and many other teams in Ring of Honor. With Romero's championship pedigree and Beretta's unique style, it is only a matter of time before the eccentric Roppongi Vice become the Ring of Honor World Tag Team Champions once again.
