Since making his Ring of Honor debut in 2010, Matt Taven has gone from struggling hopeful, to rising star, to winner of multiple championships.
Taven broke through in 2013 when he won the prestigious ROH Top Prospect Tournament. He did so with the help of the devious Truth Martini, who welcomed Taven into The House of Truth.
As a result of winning the tournament, Taven received a shot at ROH World Television Champion Adam Cole. Not only did Taven upset Cole to win the title, but he went on to hold it for what was then a record 287 days.
During his reign as ROH World Television Champion, Taven successfully defended the title against the likes of Cole, Jay Lethal, Roderick Strong, Davey Richards, Eddie Edwards, Matt Hardy, and others.
Eventually, dissension arose between Taven and Martini. At Final Battle 2013, a clearly distracted Taven lost the title to Tommaso Ciampa. In the following days, Taven made it public that he was leaving The House of Truth.
Taven was blindsided by Lethal, who shocked everyone by aligning himself with Martini. The intense rivalry between Taven and Lethal led to a steel cage match at Field of Honor in August 2014 for Lethal’s ROH World Television Title. Taven appeared to be on the verge of regaining the championship, but Lethal escaped with his title thanks to interference from Martini.
Shortly thereafter, Taven announced via social media that he could not come to terms with ROH on a new contract and would be leaving the promotion. While he was away, Taven’s friends Cole, Michael Bennett and Maria Kanellis formed a unit known as The Kingdom.
During ROH World Champion Jay Briscoe’s title defense against Bennett in September 2014, Taven made his surprise return by hitting Briscoe over the head with Bennett and Maria’s “Title of Love” belt. Taven, the newest member of The Kingdom, had developed a cocky attitude and no longer sought the fans’ approval.
Taven and Bennett formed a highly successful tag team and went on to win New Japan Pro Wrestling’s IWGP Tag Team Championship from The Bullet Club (Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson) at Invasion Attack in April 2015.
At All-Star Extravaganza VII in September 2015, Taven and Bennett won the ROH World Tag Team Championship from The Addiction (Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian) in a three-way match that also included The Young Bucks.
Taven and Bennett lost the ROH World Tag Team Title to War Machine at Final Battle three months later. During that match, Taven suffered a major knee injury. He was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a ruptured lateral meniscus and a torn medial meniscus.
While recovering from  knee surgery, Taven continued to be a fixture at ROH events, observing matches and sometimes sitting in on commentary.
In March 2016, Taven came to the ring on crutches to interrupt Cole, who was addressing the fans. Taven shocked everyone -- especially Cole -- by announcing that Cole was out of The Kingdom and the group would be rebuilt in his image.
