Ring of Honor, Road Rage, and Richmond!

Read inside for a preview of this Saturday's action...
This Saturday, May 18th at 7:30pm EST, Ring of Honor will return to the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond, VA for a big "Road Rage" TV Taping event featuring a World Title match between two of the toughest individuals to ever enter an ROH ring in Jay Briscoe and BJ Whitmer! Also, Kevin Steen continues his quest to destroy S.C.U.M when he takes on Jimmy Jacobs, a 6-Man Tag with the World Tag & TV Champions facing their next challengers, The Wolves battling S.C.U.M, and more!
Jay Briscoe defends against “Buzzsaw” BJ Whitmer
On the heels of Kevin Steen's victory over Jay Lethal back at the “11th Anniversary Event” in March, Match Maker Nigel McGuinness set several future World Title challengers in hopes to rip the belt from the clutches of S.C.U.M. Mark Briscoe, Jay Briscoe, Adam Cole, and BJ Whitmer were all slotted in and it was Mark Briscoe who was given first crack at the “War” event. The younger Briscoe came up short in his challenge against Steen but his older brother knocked it out of the park at “Supercard of Honor VII” when he dethroned Kevin and became the new World Champion. Immediately a surge of hope went through the ROH locker room and, with Cole getting his title opportunity at “Border Wars 2013”, there was a sense relief that, for the first time in a year, the World Title match did not involve S.C.U.M. Steve Corino found a way to stick his nose into the match, offering a Cole a spot in his unit and eating a Tower of London from Nigel for his trouble, but it was still ROH vs. ROH when Jay pinned Cole to retain his championship.
Now, after waiting patiently for over two months, BJ Whitmer steps up to the challenge of dethroning the World Champion only now it is a man he respects in Jay Briscoe instead of one he loathes in Kevin Steen. That respect did not stop BJ from confronting Jay in Belle Vernon last Saturday after The Briscoes failed to capture the World Tag Team Titles from reDRagon nor did it prevent the physicality that broke out before security halted the proceedings. An emotional Whitmer took the microphone and expressed how, for him, capturing the World Title represented more than just being the best it, it also represented his redemption after years of trials and tribulations. It represents proof that everything Whitmer has been through in his life since the day he left ROH several years ago has been worth it. While BJ has challenged for the World Title in the past, notably against Samoa Joe at “Wrath of the Racket”, it has been many years and this time certainly is very different for him than any previous title opportunity...
ROH World Tag Team Champions reDRagon (Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish) & ROH World TV Champion Matt Taven vs. Jay Lethal & C&C Wrestle Factory (Caprice Coleman & Cedric Alexander)
World TV Champion Matt Taven is coming off a successful title defense over Mark Briscoe at “Border Wars 2013” as well as turning away the Proving Ground challenge of Tadarius Thomas in Belle Vernon last Saturday. The World Tag Team Champions reDRagon (Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish), while spending the weekend of “Border Wars 2013” away from the grind of the ring wars due to a supposed injury to O'Reilly, are fresh off a successful title defense of their own last Saturday against Jay & Mark Briscoe.
Kyle and Bobby Fish, coming out of “Supercard of Honor VII” claimed O'Reilly suffered a serious arm injury during his one-on-one battle with Davey Richards on ROH TV and thus would be unable to compete at “Border Wars 2013” or during the ROH TV Tapings the following day. Watching the match back, it is very likely that Kyle suffered some sort of injury during that bout and a picture he made public afterward reinforced the likelihood. Whether or not it was an injury serious enough to keep him out of competition, well that is up for debate...
“I have seen people questioning the legitimacy of my injury.” said Kyle to ROHWrestling.com prior to their Briscoes title defense, “As far as those people and their utterly disrespectful accusations, I have absolutely nothing to say. Bobby and I are champions, we will fight through injury whenever possible, but sometimes it is in the best interest of our futures to allow time to heal up. If you think that we did nothing but kick back and relax while ROH was in Canada, the fans and The Briscoes will see for first-hand just how wrong that assumption is when we put Jay and Mark down...AGAIN...this Saturday. Oh, and we are well aware of what's waiting for us in the near future...we know Caprice and Cedric are all lined up to get a shot. They will learn, just like The Briscoes and The Wolves before them, what happens when you chase the dragon...”
Kyle was prescient in regards to the Briscoes match, but as far as Caprice & Cedric, what he is referring to is that C&C Wrestle Factory are due a future World Tag Team Title shot due to events that you will see unfold on “Ring of Honor Wrestling” TV. They aren't the only ones with a golden opportunity in their future though. Jay Lethal, already a former TV Champion, is also owed a shot at the title he lost last year as a result of events on upcoming episodes of ROH TV. Now ROH officials have made a huge six-man tag for our return to Richmond with all three contenders facing off with the champions they will challenge. It's Jay Lethal, Caprice Coleman, & Cedric Alexander vs. World TV Champion Matt Taven & World Tag Team Champions reDRagon (Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish)! Can the challengers get a leg up on the champions before they get their title opportunities?
Kevin Steen vs. Jimmy Jacobs w/ Steve Corino
Kevin Steen is on a crusade to rid the world of S.C.U.M one man at a time and that mission started last weekend in Belle Vernon when the former World Champion put down Rhett Titus with a Package Piledriver...then sent a message to the rest of the unit when he delivered TWO more to the man who says he is “Addicted to SCUM”.
While that one-on-one battle may have been successful, when Steen attempted to get involved in the Jacobs/Lethal No DQ battle later that night to stop Steve Corino from interfering, it backfired, Steen got inadvertently superkicked by Jay, and it directly led to a Lethal loss after he was speared through a table by Jimmy. Suffice it to say that between his recent history, that mishap, and taking Lethal's place in the “Border Wars 2013” tag match only to lose the match to Jacobs, the locker room as a whole does not look fondly about Kevin Steen nor does anyone trust him”
Whether or not that trust even matters to Steen remains to be seen but this Saturday night in Richmond his stated mission to decimate S.C.U.M will continue when “The Zombie Princess” Jimmy Jacobs goes head-to-head with Steen! These two men had a violent clash at the “10th Anniversary Event” that ultimately put Jacobs back on this dark path and led to the formation of S.C.U.M in the first place. Steen won that battle in New York City last year; will Richmond see a repeat performance from Kevin or is it the depraved Jacobs who holds the advantage having just pinned the former World Champion at “Border Wars 2013”?
ROH vs. S.C.U.M
The American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) vs 2 members of S.C.U.M
They were two of the victims of S.C.U.M's declaration of war at the "11th Anniversary Event", and now Eddie Edwards and Davey Richards will get their chance at revenge in Richmond when The American Wolves face two members of S.C.U.M in tag team action!
"The fact that I feel some responsibility in all of this will never change." said Davey Richards to ROHWrestling.com, "I lost the belt to Kevin, I dropped the ball in our rematch, I still feel like I opened the door for S.C.U.M last year. What Corino has done with it since Chicago though, that is something else entirely and me and Eddie, well the way I look at it, we still owe them all for the beating we took that night. So Steve, come May 18th, it is payback and The Wolves don't give a damn if it's Rhett Titus, Rhino, Matt Hardy, or some other sucker you find to buy your crap, we will dominate whichever of your minions you send out. See you might notice a theme here Steve because we certainly do...every night you refuse to name which SCUM members will fight but the truth Steve, the truth is that no one on the Ring of Honor side actually gives a damn who they fight because ALL of you are marked men and all of SCUM will be broken."
Roderick Strong vs. Mark Briscoe
Coming off a TV Title loss at "Border Wars 2013" and a Tag Team Championship loss in Belle Vernon last Saturday, for only the second time Mark Briscoe will take on Roderick Strong in singles competition! They have collided in standard, 6, and 8-Man Tags, SOTF Qualifiers, Four Corner Survivals, Six Man Mayhems, but only one time, way back in 2006 at “How We Roll”, have these two men ever met in singles competition here in ROH. It is shocking that despite each man's lengthy tenure in Ring of Honor, they have only met that solitary time in a one-on-one situation...
"Mark, bro, not to steal someone else’s line but sorry about your damn luck." said Roderick Strong, "I mean you've seen the beatings I've put on Jay every time we fight. I left him laying in his own blood when he came after my title if you remember, and now it's going to be me and you going toe-to-toe. Mark I hate to tell you this but if Jay can't hang with me, what makes you think you've got a chance bro? Mister ROH right here...to hell with your day one founding father crap, ROH is the house I built Mark and when this match is all done, everyone will say 'damn, he was right, it was only Roderick Strong who survived'. See you in Richmond Chicken."
Adam Cole vs. Adam Page
Adam Cole finds himself in a tough situation; coming off a World Title loss at “Border Wars 2013” to Jay Briscoe, the former TV Champion has been told by Nigel McGuinness that he is in a position for a rematch down the line due to Steve Corino's involvement in the bout but he has to wait behind men like BJ Whitmer who gets his chance this weekend, Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards who have title bouts scheduled for June, and Michael Elgin who is due a title match as a result of his “Supercard of Honor VII” victory over Jay Lethal. In the mean time, Cole has to continue to fight and maintain his standing as a contender whilst dealing with the continued courting of Corino. Cole came up short in Belle Vernon against Whitmer & Roderick Strong in their Triple Threat Match when he lost the deciding fall to BJ, a loss that certainly can't help his position on the ladder of contention.
Now in Richmond, Cole looks to rebound from that loss by putting down the challenge of Adam Page, a man looking for that key victory that will put him into a full-time position on the ROH roster. A win over a former TV Champion and World Title contender would be exactly that.
"Unbreakable" Michael Elgin vs. Kyle Matthews
In a similar fashion as Cole, Michael Elgin is a man with a World Title match in his future but he is willing to postpone that date with destiny in order to deal with the S.C.U.M threat first. While a battle with Corino's lot may not be the bout “Unbreakable” faces in Richmond, the one that he does enter is by no means a “night off”. Kyle Matthews, the 2012 Future Legend award winner at the Cauliflower Alley Club, is a well traveled athlete. In addition to having spent time in the Zero-1 Dojo in Japan in Matthews has competed across the country against the best of the best including Bryan Danielson, Colt Cabana, Jimmy Rave, and Davey Richards. Matthews, having stepped into an ROH ring only once before back in 2009 when Eddie Kingston beat him down on HDNet, looks to make a huge impact on his return by defeating Elgin. Matthews certainly has his work cut out for him though when he steps into the ring with the man whom the fans in Belle Vernon called “NEXT WORLD CHAMP” after his battle with ACH...
Aden Chambers & Brandon Day vs. A-1 (Jeff Early & Zak Hilton)
Just signed to go down on Saturday, two teams will get an opportunity to shine as Aden Chambers & Brandon Day will take on A-1 (Jeff Early & Zak Hilton) in a special tag team attraction! Always on the lookout for new talent, ROH officials & Match Maker Nigel McGuinness are giving these men a chance to prove they can hang in the best tag team division in professional wrestling!
In addition to those great matches, “The Sicilian Psychopath” Tommaso Ciampa will also be in action!
