This Saturday & Sunday Ring of Honor Wrestling returns to Chicago Ridge, IL for the first time since September for TWO huge live events!
On Saturday March 2nd we present our “11th Anniversary Event” live on iPPV with all three World Titles defended, a dream tag team match, a big time 2/3 Falls grudge match, and more.
Then on Sunday March 3rd we come back with a special afternoon card for a round of “Ring of Honor Wrestling” TV Tapings which will include a TV Title defense, a Tag Title defense, the Women of Honor in action, and plenty more with the fallout from Saturday night making an immediate impact!
This weekend could be a game-changer for the the face of ROH or, if Steve Corino & S.C.U.M have it their way, it could be the death of honor as we know it. You can catch all the action of the “11th Anniversary Event” live on iPPV as it happens by ordering here, or if you can be at The Frontier Fieldhouse in-person, tickets for both events are available right here in the ROH Store or get them at the door Saturday & Sunday!
Let's take a look at what brought us to this dance:
“11th Anniversary Event”
March 2nd, 2013
ROH World Championship
Kevin Steen defends against Jay Lethal
It has been months in the making, since before last October's “Killer Instinct” event really, when Jay Lethal put himself on the path to challenge for the World Title in front of his hometown audience. At that time then-Executive Producer Jim Cornette implored anyone in the locker room to step up and show the edge, that killer instinct JC felt would be needed to dethrone World Champion Kevin Steen. Lethal stepped up to the challenge but Cornette felt he didn't have that ruthless factor to be successful against the champion. While Jay took it upon himself to prove Jim wrong; he lashed out at opponents and officials alike, at “Death Before Dishonor X” he put down Homicide, a man who is certainly one of the most vicious fighters in ROH's history, at “Caged Hostility” he showed himself willing to take on all of S.C.U.M on his own, just to prove he deserved the title match. So on October 6th, in front of friends & family in New Jersey, Jay got the opportunity.
It was a war indeed as Lethal seemed to have Steen on the ropes until the action spilled out to the floor; once it go there, the tables certainly turned. The World Champion antagonized Jay's parents who were seated in the front row, in response they threw a drink at him, to which Steen retorted by spitting on Lethal's mother. The physical and emotional eruption that came from Jay in that moment was quite unlike anything ROH had seen out of him in the past and it ultimately led to complete chaos. The match was thrown out, making Jay the only World Title challenger that Steen hasn't actually beaten, and resulted in Lethal assaulting Jim Cornette in the locker room, effectively putting JC out of commission.
Lethal would earn himself another title shot though by winning “Survival of the Fittest 2012” but Steen took advantage of the situation by holding up ROH officials if they wanted him to appear at “Glory by Honor XI” to defend his title. He made specific demands including removing the ban on the Package Piledriver and banning Lethal's parents from attending ROH events, but most importantly, he got Lethal blocked from challenging for the title while Kevin remained champion.
This obviously did not sit well with Jay as every waking moment since then has been spent fighting to get another chance at Steen. He confronted newly appointed Match Maker Nigel McGuinness at “Final Battle 2012” looking to be reinserted in the title hunt but that confrontation only served to get Lethal tossed from the building after he spit on Nigel. He confronted Nigel once more on TV hoping to sway the former World Champion's mind but rather than whole-heartedly agree to Lethal getting a match, he put the ball in Steen's court. Nigel told Jay that if Steen agreed to the match, then Lethal would get his title opportunity.
To the shock of Nigel, Lethal, the fans, and the rest of S.C.U.M, when confronted by Jay, Steen actually agreed to the title match and would later inform everyone that he agreed, not because he felt Jay deserved it based on who he beat, but because Lethal was the one who got rid of JC. Steen expressed that he truly loved ROH, that the only reason he wanted to kill when he returned in 2012 was to save it from Cornette. With JC gone, Steen was finally proud to be champion and this was his way of thanking Lethal. It was a surprising sentiment from the champion and one that is certainly at odds with how his fellow members of S.C.U.M have conducted themselves. To say Lethal doubts Kevin's sincerity would be a gross understatement but ultimately all that mattered to Jay is that he now had his rightfully earned title shot.
This Saturday night Jay Lethal will attempt to fulfill his dream of becoming ROH World Champion and ending the nightmare of Kevin Steen's near 10-month title reign. Yet a question lingers: what if Steen's words are true? What if his reignited love for ROH is genuine and his pride at being champion legitimate? What would an ROH helmed by THAT version of Kevin Steen be like?
ROH World Tag Team Championship
Jay & Mark Briscoe defend against redDRagon (Bobby Fish & Kyle O'Reilly)
At “Final Battle 2012”, Jay & Mark Briscoe captured the World Tag Titles for the 8th time when they defeated Steve Corino & Jimmy Jacobs and Caprice Coleman & Cedric Alexander in a Sudden Death Three Way. It proved to be a continuation of the dominance The Briscoes had shown over S.C.U.M throughout 2012, a year in which, aside from Corino cheaply defeating them at “Glory by Honor XI”, the brothers from Sandy Fork have S.C.U.M at every turn.
“Final Battle 2012” was also the night Bobby Fish & Kyle O'Reilly truly stepped out onto the world stage as a duo when they took on the reunited American Wolves of Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards. They were defeated, that much is true, but the fact that the nascent duo hung in there every step of the way with one of the best teams ROH (if not pro wrestling as a whole) has ever seen says a great deal about their ability.
Now, after earning a Tag Title opportunity on TV courtesy of a victory over The Wolves in a Gauntlet Match, the team now known as redDRagon will attempt to shock the wrestling world by defeating the cornerstones of ROH. This will be the fight of Fish & O'Reilly's lives; it may sound like hyperbole, especially after the pair faced down the Wolves in NYC, but they have never been on the other side of a fight with The Briscoes in a championship situation...
Dream Tag Team Match
The American Wolves (Eddie Edwards & Davey Richards) vs. The Forever Hooligans (Rocky Romero & Alex Koslov)
It's been since our 2010 events in Phoenix that either of them have seen the inside of the ROH ring, but on March 2nd as part of our “11th Anniversary Event” in Chicago Ridge, The Forever Hooligans of Rocky Romero & Alex Koslov are coming back to Ring of Honor!!
Romero's resume in Ring of Honor is strong with two World Tag Championship reigns under his belt (the first with Ricky Reyes, the second with Davey Richards), and his international credits are just as stacked. A former IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion as Black Tiger, he also holds three IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Championship reigns under his belt; two of those actually with Richards, and the most recent one, which ended on November 11th, was with Koslov at his side.
Koslov's ROH history is short but includes battles with some of the best including Roderick Strong, Bryan Danielson, and Romero himself. Ever since his return to independent wrestling, Koslov has been chomping at the bit to get back into ROH competition and now he will get that opportunity with Romero at his side.
Yet while this opportunity is golden, it is one that comes with some serious competition because on that night, live on iPPV, The Forever Hooligans will collide with The American Wolves of Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards! The ties that bind Richards & Romero run deep, from their No Remorse Corps championship run in ROH to their IWGP Jr. Tag run, they have traveled the world together as allies but now they will collide as foes.
“I'm happy to see Rocky come back home to ROH.” offered Davey to, “It's especially exciting to see him come back with Koslov at his side, but I have to tell you Rocky that your homecoming is going to be bittersweet. You're going head-up with the Wolves Rocky, and while you and I were partners, successful ones at that, Eddie is my brother. No offense Rocky, but he is the best tag partner I have had in wrestling...he's my blood. So I'm looking forward to the competition you and Alex bring, and I'm hoping I'll get to see you a lot more going forward, but if not, don't expect us to apologize for spoiling your triumphant return to ROH. Our hunt for gold is back on with a vengeance boys and Rocky, you and Alex are standing in the way.”
2 Out of 3 Falls - Truth Martini is Banned from Ringside
"Unbreakable" Michael Elgin vs. Roderick Strong
The history is rich & back to “Fate of an Angel II” in 2010 where Elgin first became part of The House of Truth. It is a history filled with ups & down's, with miscommunications & mistakes, with humiliations and embarrassments, and ultimately betrayals. The final straw came at “Death Before Dishonor X” when Elgin powerbombed the hell out of Strong to which Strong paid the favor back at “Glory by Honor XI” when he drilled Elgin with a Sick Kick following his World Title loss to Kevin Steen.
Finally, at “Final Battle 2012” they collided one-on-one but Roderick Strong took advantage of Truth Martini's involvement and smacked Michael Elgin in the skull with The Book of Truth to pick up the victory. Roddy then walked out on Truth, explicitly stating he is done with Martini, and after Elgin recovered “Unbreakable” did the same, albeit in a much more physical fashion.
At “Defy or Deny II” in Milwaukee, Strong once again got the better of “Unbreakable” by eliminating him from the Defy or Deny challenge first and then, in a Six Man Tag on a recent edition of “Ring of Honor Wrestling” TV, Strong again picked up a victory over Elgin.
Psychologically one must wonder if Strong has an advantage with this series of victories of his former ally, but ultimately it has all been preamble to the match that has been signed for our “11th Anniversary Event” on March 2nd...
Saturday night, live on iPPV, the two former House of Truth members will collide one-on-one once more, but this time it's going to take more than a single fall to be declared victor. ROH Match Maker Nigel McGuinness has declared that this will be a 2 Out Of 3 Falls Match! Not only that but he has also declared that if Truth Martini shows his face during this match, he will be suspended indefinitely!
“I am mister endurance, bro.” said Roderick to, “Every day I train I go at it like I'm getting ready for a marathon, like every match is an Iron Man. You think Mikey runs as hard as I do? You think he can hang in the gym like that? Trust me I know what the kid is capable of, I've been in the gym with him, and I've got nothing to worry about when it comes to conditioning. All day long, all day strong.”
Elgin also had his own thoughts to offer up for this battle:
“Roderick is going to tell the world how great his conditioning is and how he is the fittest man in Ring of Honor. I know the man, I've heard the speech first hand, but the fact of the matter is that I am just as highly conditioned as Roderick, if not more so. The fact of the matter Roderick is that this fight has less to do with your physical conditioning and more to do with your ability to survive a beating. This is about me putting you down in two straight falls, embarrassing you, and moving on with my life. Thanks to Nigel, there will be no Truth to bail you out this time, no Truth to save you from being broken in half.”
ROH World TV Championship
Adam Cole defends against Matt Taven w/ Truth Martini
After last weekend's edition of “Ring of Honor Wrestling” TV it was announced that Matt Taven, as a result of winning the 2013 Top Prospect Tournament, would receive a TV Title Match THIS Saturday night at the “11th Anniversary Event”!
His shot came about as a result of Taven defeating Tadarius Thomas in the finals due to some questionable help from Truth Martini. The fact that Martini helped was NOT questionable, who he intended to help is actually what was in question. To all eyes it seemed as if Martini was intending to help Tadarius secure the victory, after all he tripped up Taven when he hit the ropes at one point and after Senior Official Todd Sinclair was inadvertently knocked out Truth tossed Tadarius his boot.
Thomas refused the boot but Taven had no such qualms, attempting to swing it at TD only to have Tadarius move, try to O'Connor roll Taven, instead eating the Book of Truth when Martini swung it at his head. Yet despite Martini's involvement earning him the victory, Taven still seemed willing to walk away from the “Life Intervention Expert” until Truth whispered...something...into Taven's ear. Whatever those words may have been, they certainly changed the demeanor of Matt Taven as he shook the hand of Martini and celebrated the win with the House of Truth head.
As the 2011 TPT Winner Mike Bennett did before him, Matt Taven will now have his first shot at championship glory in ROH when he challenges Adam Cole for the World TV Title live on iPPV! Cole, creeping on the 8th month of his title reign, is coming off a top-shelf Proving Ground clash with Jimmy Jacobs but his focus has certainly been wrapped up in one Matt Hardy in since “Final Battle 2012”. More on that later, but it is certainly a question of just how focused Cole will be on Saturday or if he is looking ahead towards his clash with Hardy on Sunday.
"The Outlaw" Charlie Haas vs. BJ Whitmer
That was the scene as it aired a few weekends back on “Ring of Honor Wrestling” TV when BJ Whitmer stepped up to take Charlie Haas' place at a live appearance after Haas failed to show up at the scheduled time.
Obviously it was a brutal assault that not only left Whitmer in serious pain, but damaged the relationship between Ring of Honor, Sinclair Broadcasting, and the Liberty Ford car dealership at which the appearance was supposed to take place.
Fines were levied against Haas but, as he has demonstrated in the past, they mean little to nothing to “The Outlaw” as long as he makes his point and hurts someone in the process. As for Whitmer, it is to his credit that he refused to miss out on his scheduled match last Saturday at “Honor vs. EVIL” in Cincinnati against Kyle O'Reilly. Not only did he still make the match, but Whitmer pulled out a submission victory over the submission grappling specialist. As for what Charlie did in Cincy, he defeated Pepper Parks and then assaulted the ROH Dojo graduate he nicknamed Cheeseburger when the kid refused to give Haas his beer. Another fine yes but also another “whatever” from Charlie Haas...
Between the parking lot assault and the beating on Cheeseburger, has learned there was talk of suspending Haas for his actions, without pay, from the 11th Anniversary weekend in Chicago Ridge but, of all people, it was Whitmer who prevented that from happening.
“I went to Nigel in Cincinnati,” said Whitmer to, “and I asked him, begged him basically, not to suspend Charlie. That's not punishment for a guy like Haas, it just means he gets to stay home and drink beer. I came to Nigel with one thought on my mind, punishing Charlie the only way he really understands, in the middle of the ring in Chicago. Nigel agreed to my request for that match, and maybe...just maybe...I might have suggested that he up the ante for such a landmark as the 11th anniversary. I might have floated out the idea of a street fight or a no holds barred match, just suggestions.”
Well it appears that Nigel took BJ's “suggestions” to heart as it will be “Buzzsaw” BJ Whitmer vs. “The Outlaw” Charlie Haas in a NO HOLDS BARRED FIGHT at the “11th Anniversary Event”!!!! Live on iPPV Saturday March 2nd, the toughest man on the ROH roster will collide with the most bitter!
Grudge Tag Team Match
S.C.U.M (Jimmy Jacobs & Steve Corino) vs/ Caprice Coleman & Cedric Alexander
“On March 2nd, from Chicago Ridge, on iPPV...evil is coming, Ring of Honor dies, and we all will live for Ring of SCUM!”
Those were the words of Steve Corino on a recent edition of “Ring of Honor Wrestling” TV after he and Rhino laid out Caprice Coleman & Cedric Alexander during their tag team match.
This assault and declaration came on the heels of Steve's announcement that S.C.U.M was essentially holding an open invitation for members with the proliferation of this piece of...propaganda:
Steve, more so than ever and lately more so than World Champion Kevin Steen, seems intent on bringing about the death of ROH and has obviously chosen the “11th Anniversary Event” on March 2nd as the centerpiece of this campaign.
There are a number of ROH wrestlers who have expressed desire to shut this down, to shut Steve and S.C.U.M down, but two men, particularly after the assaults they have suffered on TV, have been very vocal to Nigel McGuinness in their need to settle up with Steve Corino and S.C.U.M.
“Caprice and I have taken it upon ourselves to silence the voice of S.C.U.M.” said Cedric Alexander to, “The two of us have fallen victim to Steve Corino, Jimmy Jacobs, Rhino, and Kevin Steen on too many occasions. The last time we were in Chicago, Steve Corino cost us an opportunity and becoming tag team champions. Right after that, on TV he did the same when he got the team disqualified to save the belts. Now Rhino and Steve get involved in our match, a match that had nothing to do with them, gore me out of my boots, and tell the world about your need to kill honor? That isn't going to stand.”
“Steve Corino” added Caprice Coleman, “I have known you a long time now and never have I known you to be what I would call a good person. Even on the days you smiled in my face, in my heart, I knew you were planning how to put a knife in my back. Still I thought, I had hoped you'd changed, maybe you even thought you'd changed, but since that day you chose to embrace Kevin Steen once again, you've been turning back into a monster. You may be worse than you've ever been Steve and since you have made it your mission to watch ROH burn, Cedric and I will make it our mission to stand against you. We will fight with our last breath to protect ROH and defend what honor means to us. Your goal to end ROH on its birthday will be a failed one Steve Corino.”
With Caprice and Cedric looking to stand for ROH, looking to settle their debts with S.C.U.M, on March 2nd it will be Coleman & Alexander taking on Steve Corino & Jimmy Jacobs in a rematch of their “Survival of the Fittest 2012” contest!!! That night the tag titles were at stake, this time it may be the very face of Ring of Honor that is on the line!
Six Man Mayhem
"God's Gift" QT Marshall vs. ACH vs. Silas Young vs. Mike Sydal vs. Adam Page vs. Tadarius Thomas
It will be "God's Gift" QT Marshall vs. ACH vs. Silas Young vs. Mike Sydal vs. Adam Page vs. Tadarius Thomas in a match that could very well steal the show! All were a part of the recent Top Prospect Tournament, Tadarius Thomas had his first taste of the top tier when he challenged Kevin Steen for the World Title at “The Hunt for Gold”, and now on iPPV each of these individuals is looking to shine!
“Forget about Tadarius,” said QT Marshall, “because he had his chance. Forget about the hype around ACH and his contract signing. Forget about Page and Sydal and Silas Young because the only name you need to remember is Q...T...Mar...shall! This Six Man Mayhem is my moment, the spotlight belongs to God's Gift, and when that last bell rings in Chicago Saturday night, it won't be Kevin Steen and Jay Lethal everyone is chattering about. It won't be The Briscoes or The American Wolves, or anyone else, the name on everyone's lips will be Q...T...Mar...shall.”
Marshall vs. ACH vs. Silas Young vs. Mike Sydal vs. Adam Page vs. Tadarius Thomas...Six Man Mayhem comes to iPPV THIS Saturday night as part of the “11th Anniversary Event”!
Prior to the start of the event we will be holding a special Autograph Signing with World Champion Kevin Steen, The Forever Hooligans of Alex Koslov & Rocky Romero, Matt Hardy, and Backstage Correspondent Veda Scott so make sure you're there early to meet them all!  Also ROH Match Maker & former World Champion Nigel McGuinness will be on-hand to sign DVD copies of his must-see documentary "The Last of McGuinness"!
“Ring of Honor Wrestling” TV Taping
March 3, 2013
We return the following day to the Frontier Fieldhouse for a special TV Taping featuring all the fallout from the night prior as well as these matches that have already been signed:
ROH World TV Championship
Adam Cole defends against the "Self Proclaimed Icon" Matt Hardy
Since their contest at “Final Battle 2012” that saw Matt Hardy defeat ROH Television Champion Adam Cole in a non-title affair with a low blow, the tensions have been building between the two men. In a recent edition of ROH TV, Match Maker Nigel McGuinness brought Hardy and Cole out to the ring together and the situation ended up in a pull apart brawl. A similar scenario played out at “Defy or Deny II” when Hardy laid out Cole with his own title belt!
Despite Nigel's apprehension to make this match a title bout due to the fashion in which Hardy has conducted himself, the demands of both men, particularly the champion's desire to defend his title, has prompted the ROH Match Maker to not only sign the rematch BUT to also put the TV title on the line! It remains to be seen how Saturday's TV Title match could effect this bout, but you know Adam Cole wants to get his hands around Hardy's neck no matter what...
World Tag Team Title Match
The Forever Hooligans (Rocky Romero & Alex Koslov) vs. The winner of the Briscoes / redDRagon match on 3/2
Romero & Koslov have the opportunity of a lifetime in only their second match as a team in ROH when they will challenge either The Briscoes or redDRagon for the belts as part of the TV Taping. Romero, as noted above, is a decorated ROH tag team champion and as a pair the Hooligans have been IWGP champs themselves. This certainly plays into their favor, particularly if they step into the ring against Fish & O'Reilly who are still working out the kinks of their pairing, and it would certainly be a coup for the Hooligans if they can become champions in ROH!
Tag Team Challenge Match
The American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) vs. Tadarius Thomas & ACH
Thomas & ACH are two of the newest faces to the ROH roster and in their first match as a pair they are stepping into the ring against one of the best teams ROH has ever scene in The American Wolves. Eddie and Davey cumulatively have 2 World Title reigns, a TV Title reign, 2 World Tag Title reigns, and a Survival of the Fittest victory to their credit...a tough test for any veteran team much less one on their first day. This could be a huge day for Thomas & ACH...
