It's rather simple. I feel that the discussion on these boards has died down so I thought every day (or every second day) I would get a bit of a discussion going on certain things.
For the beginning of this (series?), we'll start with someone that everyone has an opinion on. He was part of one of the best tag teams in 2006, has participated in RoH's longest match and is the only wrestler that can claim he has won the World Championship on more than one occasion.
What are your thoughts on... Austin Aries?
(match quality, promos, appearance, past feuds, as a person outside the ring, moveset, etc.)

Austin Aries is my favourite wrestler in ROH, and has been since I first watched him on DVD in spring 2005. Having followed the promotion via the board and watched some of the shows of 2003, I picked up Generation Next, Testing The Limit and Final Battle 04 to see what this chap was all about who had been selected as the successor to the mighty Joe. I was instantly hooked.
As far as moveset, I must admit his MOVEZ!! were one of the things that hooked me, especially his fast sidewalk slam, corkscrew elbow and crucifix bomb. But long after the intrigue of the moveset wore off, his ability to draw me in kept me coming back for more.
His promos are effective as he never goes over the top, but it isnt his strongest point. But then when you're as good as he is in the ring, you don't have to be The Rock on the mic.
Mt favourite feud of his is actually he and Roddy against the Briscoes, peaking at Unified, and I'm honoured to say I was front row to see him injured in the line of duty but still pulling out an outstanding performance.
My favourite of Aries' matches rank among my favourites in wrestling, full stop. He was the man I wanted most to see make it to two-time champion, long may his reign continue. |

I don't like him. Him as cocky champ makes me not buy dvd or watch tv. I liked him a yr ago fighting AOTF but heel Aries as champ and refusing the defend the belt and/or the AALL really annoy me to the point of changing the channel and skipping dvds.
I really feel they could've and should've gave Lynn a longer reign. |

I was a fan (didn't regard him as one of the absolute best like Danielson, Joe, AJ, Nigel etc.) but since the end of '07 he's been nothing more than boring and repetitive.
The feud with Jacobs in the end was a huge waste of time and really did nothing for either man and really just made me wonder why I tried to care about it in the first place.
His heel run as champ so far is just as boring as his first one was 4 years ago, He's improved on the mic so i'll give him that but he's still dull to watch in the ring IMO. |

I think the Lynn reign was far more entertaining and interesting because no1 knew who would dethrone him. Aries' reign is about how long he can keep from defending it as where Lynn defended it every night and I really enjoyed that about Lynn.
I hate Aries as champ and really hope he loses the belt at Final Battle to Tyler so I can enjoy every dvd again. If it wasn't for Strom at DBD, The Final Countdown Tour and the AOTF stuff I wouldn't have bought a dvd of his reign. I'm sure Davey will put on great stuff and so will Omega but neither will take the belt from him. |

My exact sentiments. Aries has done zero w/ the belt. Nigel is the ideal reign as champion, because every show he went out there and was a candidate for MOTN. Lynn may not have been booked in the best matches but he went out and busted his ass because he new he had to live up to standards of Nigel and other Champs. Aries just seems like hes carrying the belt while others carry the show, and maybe hes wrestling underpar on purpose because he doesnt want ppl to cheer him even for a good match, but I have not bought a single dvd because of an aries match this year. |

| Do not fault Aries for going out and not having MOTN. That is how he is being booked as champion. Match quality is purposely taking a backseat to CHARACTER. |

Why? You can be a heel champion and still have great matches. |

I imagine the powers that be feel that CHARACTER is a more important factor in broadening the fanbase.
EDIT: I'm guessing they feel it's easier for "casual" fan to understand. |

TO Seige and ChuckyT...my response was very matter of fact, but in no way was I being a jerk to the orignal poster.
I do feel that any discussion of wrestlers in a personal way of how they are encountered outside of the ring has no place here and as such, this is the forum to voice that (whether or not it puts your undies in a twist).
That has been a long-standing policy and opens up too many cans of worms than need be opened here. |
